The Time to Plan for Retirement is Right Now
By admin on Jul 14, 2009 in Money Saving Articles
In order to avoid this scenario happening to you, the time to start planning for your retirement is right now. Many people live 30 or 40 years past retirement age so it takes many years of savings in order to get through that period of time and remain financially stable. If you want to enjoy that period of time, then you need to start planning for it immediately. Wouldn’t it be nice to reach that age and be able to relax and do some of the things you always dreamed of but didn’t have the time to do? If you have not yet started planning for your “old age,” then you should do so while you are still able to work hard and earn money. Sit down with a budget and find a way to put as much money as comfortably possible into an account that will be considered “hands off,” no matter how small. Just be sure to put it somewhere that is not easily accessible by you in case you become tempted to “borrow” from it at some point. Your retirement fund should be put into some type of account that will earn money, such as a money market account, IRA, or interest-earning savings account. The choice is yours to make but take care not to pull from it because you will need to let it build in order to have an amount that will take care of you once you become unable to work. In addition, take full advantage of everything offered by your employer, including retirement accounts, IRA’s, and annuities. Some employers offer great packages and some don’t. If you work for one that does, make sure you take full advantage of their generosity. Retirement savings should be thought of as security for your future. It will mean that, once you reach that age, you will not have to depend upon anyone to take care of you. This will be a blessing both for you and your children because they will have their own lives to handle and won’t need an extra burden. If you plan smartly, you will be able to avoid that “nursing home” trap and enter into one of the newer, much nicer retirement homes instead should the need arise. People smart enough to save for their retirements end up being able to enjoy themselves. They can easily take care of their monthly expenses, travel, and do many things they only dreamed of when they were younger. Retirement really should be the very best years of your life, a time you can enjoy, knowing that you have raised your children successfully, paid off your home, made wise decisions about investments, and are now ready to sit back and reap the benefits of a lifetime of hard work.
